Plans unveiled for new Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan stage

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan unveiled plans Tuesday for a permanent venue on Saskatoon’s riverbank.

City council gave the theatre festival approval in principle back in May for a project to upgrade its site on the riverbank between the University Bridge and the former Mendel Art Gallery building.

The festival has historically been held in a large tent, which has to be taken down at the end of each year’s event.

Artist’s renderings by Saskatoon’s aodbt architecture + interior design detail the plan for a permanent stage and amphitheatre, along with two pavilions at the site.

Festival organizers kicked off a $3 million fundraising drive Tuesday, with the goal of getting the project completed in time for the 2020 edition of the festival.
