The tournament has raised over $30,000 for various charities and other causes throughout Saskatoon.
About two months since the team’s bus crashed near Nipawin, one more Humboldt Bronco is getting out of hospital and getting ready to graduate.
Defenceman Xavier Labelle, 18, issued a statement Wednesday sharing the news he’d been discharged from Saskatoon’s City Hospital.
He thanked family, friends, first responders and hospital staff for their care and support as he’s worked to recover from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull and an estimated 20 broken bones.
“You all gave me the strength and courage that I needed to start healing and feeling better. Thank you.”
Labelle said he has no memory of the April 6 crash, or the two weeks following it.
He also shared the shock of learning of the 16 killed and 13 injured in the crash. He said it was an honour to have known, played and worked with the teammates, coaches and staff lost in the tragedy.
“Although all of the Bronco families and loved ones are still trying to come to terms with the magnitude of this loss, we are supporting each other as best as we can.”
Labelle said he’s had teachers coming in to tutor him throughout his recovery, allowing him to complete his last three high school classes.
He announced plans to graduate at the end of the month from Saskatoon’s École Canadienne-Française.
