A car chase in northern Saskatchewan earlier this week ended with a gunshot and five lengthy criminal charges.
Meadow Lake, Loon Lake and Pierceland RCMP announced a joint effort to stop a stolen car chase and arrest the five people inside.
It all started when Meadow Lake RCMP received a call of a vehicle on fire around five miles south of Dorintosh just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The flames quickly spread from the vehicle, forcing RCMP to call in water bombers working nearby to extinguish the blaze.
Once officers were able to investigate the vehicle, they found out it was reported stolen earlier that day.
Half an hour later, officers got another call of a Hyundai Accent driving erratically in Meadow Lake Provincial Park. Pierceland and Loon Lake RCMP found the car on Highway 21 and stopped the vehicle after a brief pursuit.
One RCMP officer fired at the vehicle during a confrontation to arrest the suspects inside the silver car. The car then quickly drove away, continuing the chase.
Eight kilometres later, the car stopped and all five people inside the vehicle were arrested without further incident. No officers or suspects were injured.
Since that time, officers found the Accent was reported stolen in Alberta in April and was part of the vehicle fire, a break and enter, and a theft at a liquor store in St. Walburg earlier Wednesday.
Neil Lewis, 31, Jessie Gladue, 25, Charlton Gladue, 31, Jody Lewis, 27, and Savanah McGilvery, 22, were taken into custody.
Lewis and McGilvery are from Frog Lake, Alta., while Lewis, Jessie Gladue and Charlton Gladue are from Saddle Lake, Alta.
All five are facing a number of charges — including possession of stolen property, break and enter, arson with disregard for life, flight from police, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and theft under $5,000.
Each of the accused will appear in Meadow Lake court next Tuesday.
Police said all circumstances surrounding an RCMP firing a gun is subject to an internal investigation.
They have also put in a request to the provincial government to appoint an independent observer for the investigation.
