Local musicians are coming together to try and help Syrian refugees in Regina.
On Friday night, Keiffer McLean, Andino Suns, and Laska – all musicians in Regina – will be at The Artesian at a benefit concert. All proceeds will be going to the Regina Open Door Society.
Regina Public Interest Research Group, or RPIRG, at the University of Regina organized the event. The group works on issues of social and environment justice both on and off campus.
Anna Dipple is the executive director of RPIRG.
“We have been very concerned about the refugee crisis and trying to do our part to help out – to help bring the refugees here, and to help support them once they come to our community.”
Dipple explained they had been educating people about refugees. They put on a teach-in last week at the university, but they wanted to do something more.
“We thought ‘okay, well we have the means to cover the cost of running an event, and then all the proceeds can go directly to an organization.'”
Each of the bands playing are interested in the sentiment behind the concert.
“They’re not just coming to play music, but they all agree with the cause,” said Dipple.
Thus far, Dipple said they had quite a bit of interest, and she expects a packed house.
The concert is at The Artesian Friday. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online, or at the door. They’re about $15 each.
