I would think that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is smiling right about now. While a commissioner should never openly cheer for a team, Bettman has to be happy with what is going on in Nevada.
The Las Vegas Golden Knights are among the Stanley Cup’s final four. This expansion team had a 51 win regular season, and has won eight of 10 in the playoffs. That’s 59 wins in 92 games.
It’s a remarkable feat for a first-year team.
The Knights success is easy to explain in some ways, but hard in others.
Easy in that they have a Stanley Cup winning goaltender in Marc-Andre Fleury, who has seen it all. It’s tough to explain, in that the Golden Knights didn’t have one scorer in the top 20 in the regular season.
The Golden Knights success has meant a loyal following from a new fan base. For those that say 30 NHL teams was too many, the league’s 31st franchise proves otherwise.
New fans in a new market is a dream come true for the National Hockey League.
