A wild chase on Saturday night ended with a man setting himself on fire in front of RCMP officers near Langham.
Warman RCMP said in a news release Monday they were advised by Saskatoon police about a vehicle leaving the city via Highway 16 and driving erratically just before midnight. The vehicle was travelling at high speeds, endangering other drivers.
Saskatoon police’s air support unit tracked the suspect from above, but RCMP attempts to stop the vehicle with spike belts failed.
RCMP said the suspect stopped at a farmyard north of Langham, attempted to steal fuel, rammed a police vehicle and fled.
Police tracked down the driver shortly after in a field where the vehicle became stuck.
RCMP said the driver proceeded to get out and pour gasoline over himself and the vehicle before lighting himself on fire.
Officers used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames, and the suspect suffered minor injuries.
The vehicle was destroyed.

“One of the most dangerous drivers we have ever seen was captured last night. 30+ drivers escaped head on collisions in Saskatoon at 100+ km/h while not being pursued by police thanks to @SPSAir1,” they wrote in a tweet.
Terrance Albert Morin, 36, is now facing charges of arson, failing to stop for a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, theft under $5,000 and breach of conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in court on May 9 at 10 a.m. in Saskatoon provincial court.
