A rule is a rule…. I guess.
But the Premier Development League in soccer needs to know when to change the rules.
The Canadian womens’ national goaltender Stephanie Labbe is good enough to play with the boys. The team she’s working out for in Calgary in the PDL says just that. The coach likes her style and it fits his system.
So will we see Labbe break the gender barrier in soccer? Nope. Well, at least not yet.
Labbe will not get to play because the league is a gender-based league and women are not allowed to play.
Really? It’s soccer.
Hayley Wickenheiser, Manon Rheaume, Shannon Szabados are among the women who have played hockey with the men. Annika Sorenstam got to try to play with the men in golf. There have been women to play semi-pro football down south.
The fact the league isn’t willing to budge is a little off-putting. What harm will it do? Does your league not need added attention?
But that’s not what it’s about for Labbe. She just wants to push herself and compete. And good on her. It’s just too bad we won’t get to see her play.
