Temporary layoffs start Friday at Nutrien’s Vanscoy mine.
Will Tigley, manager of media and digital communication with the mining company said around 700 people will be affected by the temporary layoffs. Tigley couldn’t confirm exactly how many staff would be laid off, but said essential staff would remain at the mine to manage remaining inventory.
According to Nutrien, the layoff is directly related to rail backlogs, the possibility of a Canadian Pacific Railway strike and the growing inventory levels at the facility.
Temporary layoffs are also planned at the Allan mine, where 600 people work, starting May 6.
In an email statement to 650 CKOM the Canadian National Railway Company said this week Nutrien told CN it either met or exceeded all contracted shipment requirements in 2018.
