Carleton Fisk against Thurman Munson. Pedro Martinez against Karim Garcia. Now, Joe Kelly against Tyler Austin.
The Red Sox and Yankees emptied the benches twice on Wednesday night. Not that I condone brawling in baseball, but there is something about the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry that is special.
The New York Daily News went over previous incidents between these two teams on Thursday and this hatred goes back to 1952. New York’s Billy Martin went after Boston’s Jimmy Piersall under the Fenway stands one night.
There may have been incidents before that we don’t know about.
These are two teams with a rich history, deep pockets and teams that haven’t given an inch in over half a century of baseball. It doesn’t look as if either team is about to stand down now.
As one former major league player said, “It’s not person against person, it’s uniform against uniform.” The Yankees and Red Sox bring the best and the worst out of each other. It’s fun to watch.
