Saskatchewan’s newest millionaire knew he won big — but he didn’t know just how big.
Gunther Appl was at his Saskatoon home last Friday when he got the win on a Super Set for Life scratch ticket. His son, Kevin, came running from downstairs when Appl started cheering loudly.
“I said, ‘I won $1,500!’ and when (my son) saw it, he kind of looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think so – we better look at this closer,’” Appl said.
After checking on the lottery smartphone app, Kevin told his father the actual prize: $1.5 million.

The 68-year-old said he immediately called his wife, Ruth Ann, who was out of town at the time.
“I was teasing saying, ‘I’m going to buy a new Audi, I’m going to do this and this.’ And she is the cautious one so I finally said, ‘at least I’m going to get a pair of pyjamas.’”

Appl’s other plans include travelling to Germany and Norway, where he and Ruth Ann have family.
The retiree, who described playing Scratch ‘N Win tickets as a hobby, bought the winner at the Saskatoon Co-op Stonebridge Food Store on Wellman Crescent.
