Plains Hotel weather vane returning to owner of Capital Pointe project

The weather vane from Regina’s old Plains Hotel was put up for sale on Kijiji over the weekend, but how did it end up there?

When the hotel was demolished in December 2011, the company Prairie Sign took the weather vane and stored it on top of its roof on McDonald Street.

It was supposed to be added to the Capital Pointe condo building once it was finished being built, but almost four years later, construction has yet to start.

“Whenever (Capital Pointe) went up, we would take it out there but unfortunately it’s just never come to be,” said Mischa Bosovich with Prairie Sign.
 
The weather vane has been sitting on the roof ever since, getting rusty. They’ve waited so long and had lost contact with the owner so they decided no one wanted it and put it up for sale.
 
“My phone just lit up from every part of the province wanting to, you know, what the price is and making offers without even seeing it,” said Lorne Piett, who oversaw the sale.
 
One of the calls was from Greg Black, project director for Augustine Group for the Capital Pointe project. He saw the Kijiji ad and is now asking for it to be taken down.
 
“They basically said ‘we had no idea where that had landed’ so they were very excited about finding it,” said Piett.
 
“We still own the sign and we still intend to put the sign up on the new building once it’s completed,” said Black.
 
Prairie Sign has been asked to put the weather vane back into storage for another two years “until the project is finished”. They’ll find a more permanent location instead of the roof which was getting damaged from the weight.
 
Could it be a “sign” of things to come with the much delayed Capital Pointe condo project? Both CJME News and Prairie Sign were told there will be an announcement made in Regina next week.
 
“We’ll announce who’s building the building and when they’re going to have equipment on the site,” said Black.

Although skeptics may say they’ve heard that many times before.
