Massive tanker move delayed by heavy rain

A massive tanker on its way from Biggar to Estevan has been delayed due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

A SaskPower spokesperson said the convoy had to divert from its planned route due to impassable conditions and they’re currently on Highway 11 near Kenaston.

The amine tank for SaskPower was manufactured in Biggar at Envirotank and it’s the largest tank ever built in Saskatchewan. It’s slated for the Boundary Dam in Estevan for SaskPower’s carbon-capture program.

The tank was loaded on Sunday and started its move down Saskatchewan’s highways on Monday, hoping to get to its destination by Thursday. But the unfavourable forecast could extend the trip into next week, reaching its destination on Tuesday, but that timeline could change.

The tank stands 66-feet high, with a 34-foot diameter. The tank is stainless steel double-wall tanker and can hold up to 1.2 million litres on water. The convoy hauling the tanker is about 205 feet from end to end and includes a pull truck, a push truck and a brake truck. SaskPower has been shutting off power temporarily to many communities along Highway 4 and 15 as the high-load moves through the province.
