It is ironic that Jerry Howarth’s retirement announcement comes on UNESCO’s World Radio Day.
It’s a day that highlights how much of a companion radio can be.
For over three decades Jerry Howarth was the consummate companion to Toronto Blue Jays fans across this country. He was the messenger to the marginal and hardcore fan. Blue Jays fans learned on Tuesday that the longtime radio broadcaster was stepping away from the microphone after 36 years because of health issues that have affected his voice.
I put Horwarth in the “he’ll be missed, but we were lucky to have him” category.
Howarth was at the microphone in 1985 when the Jays first made the playoffs. He was there in 1992 and 1993 when the Blue Jays won back to back championships. He was there in 2015 and 2016 when Toronto went to the ALCS.
I also put Howarth in with Canada’s best-known sports broadcasters. Hockey has Bob Cole and football had the late Ron Lancaster. Blue Jays fans had, and now will miss, Jerry Howarth.
