They’re still waiting for the folks at Guinness to make it official, but it appears fans who attended the Saskatchewan Rush game on Saturday at SaskTel Centre have set a new world record.
“We wanted to do something fun, to bring everyone together and create a very special moment. So late in the second half we attempted to break the world record for the world’s largest group hug,” said Brandon Urban, media relations manager for the Saskatchewan Rush.
“All that it required was everyone stand up and put their arms around one another.”
Urban said just over 14,300 fans were at Saturday’s the game against the Vancouver Stealth.
“(We are) waiting to hear back from Guinness to see if they at least acknowledged us in our attempt to break the record, at least we’ll have the bragging rights,” Urban said.
The record was set back in 2010 when 10,554 people shared a group hug in Ottawa.
The Rush went on to win the game, beating the Stealth 11-9.
