The beauty of sport was on display last night at the Air Canada as the Leafs shut out the Islanders 5-0. Maple Leaf fathers were there taking part in an annual “dads’ trip.”
There are stops in New York and Boston yet to come.
Along for the ride last night was Jim Dermott of Newmarket, Ont. Jim’s son, Travis, was playing in his ninth NHL game with Toronto.
In a first intermission television interview, I got the sense Jim just enjoyed the company being around some of the other dads.
Then, late in the second period, Travis scored his first NHL goal. The images of Jim, being nearly in tears as the other dads congratulated him, were spectacular.
Travis Dermott will likely never be mistaken for a McDavid, Matthews or Crosby. But last night the Dermott’s, father and son, enjoyed a moment trophies and cash won’t top.
