Blades pull out shoot out win over Cougars

Blades goaltender Tyler Brown made 36 saves in regulation time and another five in the shootout as the Blades pulled out a 4-3 shoot out win over the Prince George Cougars at SaskTel Centre on Saturday night.

After Josh Paterson scored Saskatoon’s second goal in the shoot out, Brown turned aside Josh Maser to help the Blades to their second straight win after defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-0 on Friday night.

Brown described the game as “fun” when it was over. It was Brown’s first victory as a Blade since being traded from Regina back on Jan. 10.

It was an exciting third period, as Blades forward Braylon Shmyr scored his 100th career goal to tie the game at 2-2 on the power play. With 5:55 left to go in the third period, the Cougars took the lead on a Ryan Schoettler goal.

The Blades thought they had tied the game when Brown was pulled in the final minute, but a goal was disallowed when Evan Fiala’s point shot was tipped with a high stick. However, seven seconds later, Max Gerlach tied the game as the Blades had the power play and the goaltender pulled.

The Blades maintain their four point lead over Prince Albert for the final wildcard spot in the eastern conference. The Blades are back in action Wednesday when the Red Deer Rebels visit SaskTel Centre.
