On the heels of Thursday night’s Oilers vs. Flames shootout game, it’s time go on another video challenge rant.
Video review in sports is useful. HD replays have helped determine if a puck has crossed a goal line in hockey, or a football has crossed a goal line. I’m fine with that.
However, on Thursday night in Edmonton video review was far from perfect when an Oiler overtime goal off the board.
Connor McDavid made incidental contact with Flames keeper David Rittich after a shot on net.
Ryan Strome scored on the rebound. It should have been the winning goal.
Flames coach Glen Gulutzan challenged the call on the ice. After referees Kendrick Nicholson and Steve Kozari looked at an iPad, they determined McDavid did interfere with Rittich.
It was not enough contact to prevent a save from being made.
There has been no level of consistency with these interference challenges this season. Like players, officials make mistakes. It’s time to live the human element of officiating, remove such challenges, and keep these games moving.
