Riders have a prayer of winning to end losing streak

The Saskatchewan Roughriders do have a prayer of winning this week when they face the Ottawa Redblacks on Sunday.

It comes from Sister Rosetta Reiniger of the Ursulines of Prelate, who has been cheering the Green and White since the Riders won the 1966 Grey Cup.

She has kept the faith through eight losses this season.

“It has been disappointing, but I believe we have turned a corner,” she told the CJME Morning Show on Friday

She has a few reasons for believing the team is ready for a win.

“We have had a lot of adversity with the injuries, losing games by such a small margin. But adversity usually develops strength of character,” she says.

“I also believe that our coach Chamblin is doing a good job even though the fans don’t agree.

“He is trying to keep the spirits up of players and in some ways, he reminds me of Coach Ken Miller who was always positive and encouraged his men.”

Ahead of each game, she prepares popcorn and her prayers. She says this is her typical prayer ahead of the games.

“Loving and gracious God, creator of all, bless all those involved in sports and other entertainment. We ask you to bless our CFL football teams.

“Dear God, we know you love all of them, but we ask that you to send extra blessings on our Riders. Keep all our players safe and free from injury. Help them to play fair.

“And please God, let our Riders win from now on. Amen.”

But a win isn’t all on God.

“I believe the players need to keep working hard but to keep that positive attitude, they have to believe in each other,” said Sister Rosetta.

But for an extra boost, she sends up a few more requests as they play.

“Usually, it’s a short prayer during the game asking God to help them make the interception or whatever,” she said.
