December saw a significant drop in drunk driving-related offences on Saskatchewan’s roads.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) reported a total of 238 people were caught for drunk driving-related offences in December 2017, marked the lowest total for the month of December since SGI began compiling the numbers four years ago.
Of the 238 offences reported, 205 led to charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, such as driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08, impaired driving or refusing a breath test.
The remaining 33 offences were drivers caught driving with blood-alcohol levels between .04 and .08 and were handled with roadside suspensions.
The 238 offences for December 2017 is an improvement over December 2016, which saw 353 drivers caught drunk behind the wheel.
An SGI spokesperson noted that the numbers are particularly promising in light of the fact there were more officers out on Saskatchewan roads during the holiday season than there were over the same period in 2016 , but charges still went down.
