A 40-year-old woman from Saskatoon has died after being hit by a semi on Tuesday night.
Two female pedestrians were hit by the truck around 10:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Davidson Crescent, which is just north of 33rd Street and Circle Drive.
The 40-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. A 31-year-old woman was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police believe an altercation broke out between the male semi driver and three women—the 40-year-old, the 31-year-old and another 27-year-old. The women were outside the semi at the time.
A neighbour was visiting with friends when he heard an argument down the street.
“I looked out and there was a couple arguing about two doors down. Mostly just verbal arguing and screaming,” he described.
“Within a couple of minutes, he was in the truck and backing it up after turning it on.”
James Hilton has lived in the neighbourhood for nine years. He went outside after hearing shouting coming from the small parking lot near his home.
“Two girls were at the truck. The guy started his truck, he took off slightly. They fell and he dragged them underneath the truck. The one died instantly,” Hilton said. “It happened in a matter of seconds.”
Another neighbour called police and Hilton ran over to see if he could help.
“I tried to calm the one down but she was having a panic attack because it was her friend,” he said.
Hilton said he didn’t recognize the truck, the driver, or any of the women. He added that the neighbourhood is usually pretty calm and there are a lot of families.
“It’s a calm area but I would never expect anything like that to happen especially with so many kids in the area,” he said. “I’m trying to cope with it but it’s hard.”
Police say the driver drove away from the scene and was found later by police. He has been interviewed by officers and released.
The 27-year-old woman was not hurt. Police are not releasing any names at this time. Speed is not considered a factor.
