Justin Trudeau was in Regina, making him the first party leader to visit Saskatchewan since the federal election campaign kicked off.
On Tuesday night, the Liberal leader took part in a Muslim prayer service at a south end mosque in Regina. On Wednesday morning, he made an appearance downtown at the Farmer’s Market as dozens of supporters stood around him with signs in hand and nodding in agreement with the party leader’s comments.
“When a plan isn’t working the real risk is sticking with the status quo,” he announced.
“Ten years of Mr. Harper’s plan has failed everyone.”
Trudeau didn’t make any new announcements or platform promises. The event was used more of a rally for Liberal supporters in Regina. Saskatchewan has not been a traditional stronghold for the party, which only has one seat out of 14. That seat belongs to longtime MP Ralph Goodale.
Even with that history, Trudeau is confident those in the province are hungry for something different.
“Saskatchewanians, right like Canadians across the country, are looking for a better plan, a better team, and the Liberal Party is working extremely hard to earn people’s trust and vote,” assured Trudeau.
Besides taking shots at Stephen Harper on things like the economy and the Senate, Trudeau used the opportunity to again tout his party’s plan to tax the wealthiest one per cent of Canadians and focus investments on those individuals in the middle class.
“Nine out of 10 Canadian families will be better off in hard dollars and cents with the Liberal plan than they are under Mr. Harper’s plan.”
Instead of giving child support cheques to the wealthy, Trudeau reiterated, he’ll use that money to lift 315,000 children out of poverty.
“We don’t just need a different government in this country my friends, we need a better one,” he stated.
Trudeau will also fly to La Ronge to visit some of the communities affected by the wildfires earlier this summer.
On Thursday, he will be in Saskatoon, joining Liberal candidates Lisa Abbott, Cynthia Block and Tracy Muggli for a town hall meeting.
