Moose Jaw police revamp court escorts after prisoner escape

After a prisoner escaped Moose Jaw police custody on Tuesday, the city’s police department has revised some of its protocol.

“The incident on Tuesday showed that someone had learned how to exploit some gaps in our process,” said Police Chief Rick Bourassa.

Jamie Munroe made an appearance at the provincial courthouse Tuesday morning, when he allegedly attacked his guard, stole the keys to his cell and shackles, and escaped.

A manhunt ensued with Munroe eventually being recaptured.

Bourassa says that now all prisoners will be escorted by two officers, a practice which he feels should have been in place before the escape.

“We had already identified that it was probably a gap. We hadn’t had any issues … our mistake, we should have had it in place earlier. It’s in place now,” said Bourassa.
