Rogers Media and CBC signed a seven-year extension on a sub-licensing agreement. What that means is CBC will still carry Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays, as it has for close to 70 years, while Rogers controls the content and receives the revenue.
Four years ago Rogers paid $5.2 billion for a 12-year contract of national television rights. The deal with CBC puts Saturday night hockey in 98 per cent of Canadian homes.
While the rights have gone from the public broadcaster to a private company, Hockey Night in Canada still belongs to the people.
On occasion, we’ve seen both CBC and Rogers attempt to make big changes to the production on Saturday nights only to have fans push back.
Viewers want credible insight, a professional looking broadcast, and for the last 30 years have wanted and have received Ron and Don.
