A fake company is shaking the dust off of an old scam in Regina, according to the police.
The company has had many names, but is currently going by ‘Elitecorpsurvey’. Regina police said it’s secret shopper scam has recently been reported to them.
In the scam, you get a text or email offering you a job as a secret shopper, but even just replying could compromise your phone or computer.
After that, the company sends a cheque to cash at your bank. While cashing the cheque, you’re told make note of several things, like how many people are in the bank, demeanor of the cashier, etc. which the police said makes the scam seem more legitimate.
After making the deposit, you’re told you can keep $500, but the rest of cash needs to be sent back to another account. They will then ask for a photo of your bank slip, from which they can take your banking information.
If this sounds familiar, police warn not to reply to the messages. If this has happened to, police say to call your bank and report to the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500.
