The game of hockey can be hard to figure out. Sunday night was no exception.
Leafs coach Mike Babcock put his 34-year-old backup goaltender, Curtis McElhinney in to face Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers at the Air Canada Centre.
Granted, the Oilers are a mystery in their own right. A team with an accomplished front office, great coaching staff and talent galore is four wins under .500 this season.
However, Leafs sniper Auston Matthews didn’t play because an injury suffered Saturday. One would think would give the Oilers more of an advantage.
Both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl had more than 20 minutes of ice time each. Edmonton peppered McEIhinney with 41 shots, and failed to score. The Oilers continue to be a fragile bunch.
I’m not shocked about a Leaf win over Edmonton. I am, however, surprised Edmonton’s star-studded line up was shut out against Toronto’s backup goaltender.
I, like many others, didn’t see that coming.
