A constable with the Estevan Police Service has been fired.
Mohammed Khan is accused of abusing his authority, discreditable conduct and assault after an arrest back in May.
He has also been charged with one count of assault.
“An incident like this affects our organization as a whole,” said Chief Paul Ladouceur on Monday. “What we want to make clear to the public is not to look at the actions of one as the actions of all.”
The action comes after both an internal and external investigation. Both investigations found the allegations were substantiated, leading to the assault charge.
“Although our officers wear uniforms, they are human and it doesn’t make them infallible,” added Ladouceur. “This can happen in any type of profession, but when it’s a policing profession it becomes a larger concern because of the nature of our work.”
Police aren’t comment any further on the allegations, saying the matter is now before the courts.
Khan was on the force for just under a year, joining last August. The 29-year-old graduated from the University of Regina with a degree in justice studies in 2011.
