A Regina lawyer outbid the likes of Google and Amazon to own the rights to “.love” websites.
The deal makes Tony Merchant a merchant of love, so to speak. The lawyer paid $9 million for the rights to the domain on Friday. He sold $50,000 worth of rights in the first four hours, including some big names who wanted to secure the “.love” address.
However, Merchant says he won’t be charging for every domain name.
“We’re giving away 2,015 of the websites (to) allow people sort of to tell their love story,” Merchant explained. However, he still hopes he ends up making money from the purchase.
This isn’t the first time Merchant has been part of an online deal. In 2011, he was pursuaded to apply for eight different domains and won some of the auctions.
