Why did the Riders dominate an Eastern Semi-Final?
Many thought that that last Sunday’s Riders/Redblacks match up would be a close game. It wasn’t because of three surprising developments.
Kevin Glenn went wire to wire.
There was no substantial relief appearance from Brandon Bridge like there was in many regular season games. Glenn was able to distribute the ball effectively in an intermediate pass game that kept the Redblacks defence off balance.
Marcus Thigpen was a difference maker.
The Riders were forced to turn to Thigpen, who only played in one regular season game for the Riders, because of injuries to Cameron Marshall and Trent Richardson. A 169-yard performance in the East Semi-Final was a nice surprise, considering the offensive line didn’t have the services of Brendon LaBatte.
William Powell was held in check.
The Redblacks leading running back was held to 50 yards on the ground in the football game. Saskatchewan isn’t known for a run stopping defence, but rose to the occasion on Sunday.
