Smoke not stopping Regina's Canada Day celebrations

Smoky haze in the sky isn’t stopping Regina’s Canada Day celebrations.

“We’re well aware of the potential health risks and advisories that can be there,” said Mark Shmelinski, communications chair with the Canada Day committee. “And we just want to be able to offer an opportunity for people to get out of the house and possibly take in some great activities to celebrate Canada Day.”

Shmelinski pointed out that a first-aid tent is always set up during the celebrations to help anyone needing help. He also encourages people to join the celebrations only if they’re feeling well enough to.

There are a lot of events on the schedule. Schmelinski highlighted the mainstage area which features local entertainment as well as headliners Harlequin and Chilliwack. There’s also a community and family stage offering storybook time, a meet and greet with the princesses from Disney’s Frozen and a show from Sufari Jeff.

As for the fireworks, Schmelinski says the committee has been assured they’ll shine through the smoke.

“The smoke will (even) enhance and add a whole other dimension (to the fireworks),” Schmelinski said.

Fireworks are scheduled to start at dusk around 10:30 p.m. The Albert Street Memorial Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic during that time, allowing pedestrians a chance to get a front-row seat for the display. Baricades will block traffic starting at 9:30 p.m.

Wascana Centre won’t be the only place with things to do on Canada Day in Regina.

The Lieutenant Governor’s garden party will welcome people to Government House. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair, and take part in the entertainment, children’s activities, and complimentary refreshments. More information is available here.

Canada Day also marks the first RCMP Sunset Ceremony at the RCMP Heritage Centre. It starts at 5:45 p.m. and features the cadet marching band, a canon drill, the lowering of the Canadian flag, the March Past, and RCMP cadets performing dismounted cavalry drills while dressed in the famous scarlet tunic. Regina’s Farmers’ Market will also be held at its usual time.
