The Saskatoon Blades offense had opportunities, but mistakes on defense proved costly in a 7-2 loss to the Victoria Royals.
Saskatoon outshot Victoria 40-26 in the contest, but the visitors were clinical on every major opportunity.
Early on, Saskatoon had several great scoring chances, but Victoria’s Griffen Outhouse shut the door every time.
On four separate occasions, the Royals slipped in behind the Blades for breakaways.
“I didn’t mind us at times,” said head coach Dean Brockman. “But it seemed like every mistake we made ended up in the back of the net.”
Dryden Michaud and Josh Patterson had the goals for the Blades. It took 27 shots before Saskatoon found the net.
“We did some really good things but we would start our shift well and then take our foot off in the last ten seconds.”
Ryan Kubic and Joel Grzybowski split the loss, Kubic was pulled in the second period after giving up five goals on 14 shots. Grzybowski made ten saves on twelve shots.
“You give up breakaway after breakaway and I felt bad for him.”
The Blades have now lost their last three straight games and face a tough test on Friday when they visit the Swift Current Broncos. Swift Current leads the East Division and boasts WHL leading scorer Tyler Steenbergen.
