After watching the Las Vegas Golden Knights home opener Tuesday night, my mind went back to 2001.
I remember thinking about the role sports plays in life.
At first glance, professional sports is a business. Highly-paid athletes perform in front of fans who pay a lot of money to watch. But sports is more than that.
The Major League Baseball season continued six days after the 9/11 attacks. NFL games were played 12 days after Sept. 11, 2001. Fans couldn’t wait to do two things – be together and get back into a routine.
Sports – like music, movies and all other forms of entertainment – gives us a release.
It gives us a chance to be a fanatic and an armchair quarterback. Sports teams give us an identity.
Sports is an escape from our complex lives in a complex world. Like baseball and football did in 2001, the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the NHL gave us that escape Tuesday.
