RCMP are investigating after cellphone video of an altercation between a man and two officers was deleted while the device was in police custody.
On July 21, RCMP were called to a residence in Meadow Lake where they came across a woman who had minor injuries.
At this time, two officers got into an altercation with a man. The RCMP members received minor injuries, but didn’t need medical treatment.
The man appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court Monday for charges of assault, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer.
He was remanded into custody and will appear in court late August.
RCMP said after the initial incident, members seized a cellphone from a witness who captured video of the altercation.
At this time, RCMP said an altercation also reportedly broke out between the witness and one of the members.
It was later learned the video was deleted while in police custody.
RCMP are now adding a separate investigation into the deletion of the video and another into the altercation with the witness.
RCMP said they are following policy by asking the Ministry of Justice to appoint an Independent Observer to evaluate of the fairness of the investigation.
No further details are available as it’s an ongoing investigation.
