The Saskatchewan Rush will soon have more competition with another team joining the National Lacrosse League.
The league announced Thursday it has awarded an expansion team to the city of Philadelphia, under the ownership of Comcast Spectacor.
The yet-to-be-named franchise will join the league in time for the 2018-19 season and play its home games at the Wells Fargo Center.
“Philadelphia has long been a hotbed for professional sport with some of the most passionate fans in the world, and we felt the time was right to bring the city another professional franchise,” NLL Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz said in a news release.
The first go around for pro lacrosse in Philadelphia ended in heartbreak when the Wings left for New England to become the Black Wolves in 2014.
“This expansion not only aligns perfectly with our 5-year strategic plan, but also brings professional lacrosse back to Philadelphia as so many fans wanted,” Sakiewic stated.
San Diego was awarded a team in August. Philadelphia becomes the 11th team to join the league.
