The Pat Canadians are now 2-0-0-0 at the Canadian Male U18 AAA Hockey Championships after opening their tournament with a 6-1 win over the host Fraser Valley Thunderbirds on Monday.
While Maddox Schultz, 15, was held goalless in the game after scoring a hat trick in the opening contest, he added two assists. Ahead of the final game on Tuesday night, Schultz was leading the tournament in scoring with five points (three goals, two assists). His teammate Chase Surkan also added two assists in the game.
Schultz is expected to be the first overall pick in this year’s WHL Draft after the Regina product led the SMU18AAAHL with 93 points (43 goals, 50 assists) in 44 regular season contests, despite being one of the youngest players in the league. The Regina Pats won the WHL Draft Lottery and will have the first chance at selecting Schultz in the draft on May 7.
Regina’s Ryan Ulmer got the Pat Canadians onto the board under a minute into the first period to give the team an early advantage after scoring on Moncton goalie Simon Cormier.
In the second period, Logan Mehl scored a pair of goals to help Regina extend their lead to three.
Moncton scored two goals in the third period to get things close as Alexandre Caissie and Nathan Weber both got pucks past Regina goaltender Taylor Tabashniuk.
But that was as close as Moncton got, as Regina held on for the win. Tabashniuk made 26 saves in the contest.
This is the first time Regina has been at the Telus Cup since 2017, but it is the club’s 10th time at the event. They have won the event four times before (1983, 1988, 1994, 1999).
There’s plenty of top-end talent on this Regina team, with the club having 14 WHL draft picks playing this season.
Regina will take on the Elgin Middlesex Canucks (1-0-1-0) on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
