“The suspect was located but refused to cooperate with responding officers; a conducted energy weapon was successfully deployed to take him into custody,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.
“Upon his arrest, the 50-year-old man was found to be in possession of a replica handgun (loaded with CO2 and pellets), a can of bear spray, and a knife.”
Police said the man is facing three charges of possession of a dangerous weapon, three charges of carrying a concealed weapon, and a single charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.
In 2024, the provincial government announced new regulations aiming to reduce the number of criminal incidents involving bear spray.
The changes include regulations to restrict the possession of bear spray in public urban spaces, and a ban on altering bear spray in order to hide or disguise the product’s identity.
Anyone charged under the new regulations could face fines of up to $100,000.
