It was a picture-perfect start for the U18AAA Saskatoon Stars at the Esso Cup in Lloydminster, as they got out to an early 4-0 lead against the North York Storm in the first period.
Kolbee Ashe, Peyton Birnie, Mickenzie Petford, Sadie Green all beat Storm goaltender Jamie Sanford.

A North York goalie swap heading into the second sparked a bit of a comeback for the Storm, as Demi Lazarou scored just 21 seconds into the second period.
Heading into the third up 4-1, the Stars looked to fend off the surging Storm.
North York’s Lily Paisley made it 4-2, but Mikayla Broadfoot put the game to bed as she put the Stars up 5-2 with eight minutes left in the third.
The Storm scored two more goals as they attempted to comeback, but ultimately fell short, with the final score standing at 5-4.
Stars goaltender Tarynn Sutter stopped 31 of 35 shots en route to the victory.
The Stars are now 1-0 at the Esso Cup. The team’s second game of the tournament will be a match against the Étoiles Laurentides Lanaudière on Monday.
The Stars are also looking to improve on their 2019 fourth place result at the Esso Cup.
The last time they finished on the podium was in 2018 when they took home the silver medal. The Stars have never won the Esso Cup.
