When most people look outside they may see a dog or a bird, but Saskatoon residents on Saskatchewan Crescent saw a heifer roaming the streets on Thursday night.
The heifer (young cow), aged between 11 and 13 months, was at Saskatchewan Beef Expo at Prairieland Park when she made a dash for freedom.

“She’s from the farm, so she wasn’t used to the big city,” said Leigh Ann Hurlburt, Agriculture Manager at Prairieland Park. “It’s not an ideal situation when you have animals that aren’t used to being in the city.”
The heifer’s journey to see the city sights began around 8:30 p.m. but was short lived, as Hurlburt said the animal was caught within 20 minutes by Idylwyld Bridge by its owners.
“It’s best for that to be done by the owners because they know .. how (their animal) will react to things,” she said. “Having the owners be able to guide it to the trailer and get it in was the best situation.”
Animal control was also called in to help out.
“This is probably their first time having to deal with something like this,” Hurlburt chuckled. “They were on site, and then once we got there they left us to deal with it.”
Hurlburt said the heifer was uninjured and no damage was caused during its sightseeing adventure down a Saskatoon residential road.
“She’s just fine, but she had enough of a trip in the city so she decided that she was going to go home for the weekend,” Hurlburt said.
“She was very frightened, so it’s just a matter of being concerned and wanting to make sure that we captured her before she hurt herself.”
Hurlburt said an animal wandering off of the grounds is a very rare thing to happen at Prairieland.
“I’ve been with Prairieland for 17 years and this is the first time anything has gotten away in a long time,” she said. “We are very conscious of the safety of our patrons and the livestock.”
This isn’t the first time a bovine ended up on the streets of Saskatoon. In 2023, Saskatoon Police responded to a call about a cow that escaped from its trailer.
