Youth, 13, charged after bear spraying at Centre Mall
A 13-year-old male youth has been charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000 after being arrested at Centre Mall on Monday.
SPS said officers were called to the mall in the 3300 block of 8th Street East around 4 p.m. on April 7 after receiving a report of a bear spraying in the food court.
Police said they were told that several youths ran off in different directions after the incident and they later found that two groups believed to be known to each another had been walking in the mall when a member of one spayed a member of the other group.
SPS said the suspect was identified and arrested in the 400 block of Kingsmere Boulevard a short time later.
Reports on social media said a number of stores in the mall closed after the incident.
Bear spray is a deterrent containing capsaicin, a chemical found in chili peppers. The canister releases a cone-shaped cloud of spray to a distance of approximately 10 m and at a speed of over 100 km/h. Capsaicin inflames the eyes and respiratory system of both animals and humans.
