As temperatures rise, crews will be clearing snow from residential and industrial streets across Saskatoon starting this weekend, in a proactive move designed to prevent deep ruts from forming on roads.
“As spring approaches, the warmer temperatures can result in melting during the day and freezing overnight, and combined with the current snowpack on streets, this creates potential conditions for severe ruts and mobility challenges,” the city explained in a statement.

“To prevent deep ruts from forming, crews will begin blading all residential and industrial streets throughout the day and night, starting in the outer areas and core of the city, maximizing operational efficiency and working their way through the neighbourhoods.”
Graders will be clearing packed snow from streets and storing it in parking lanes. Residents were encouraged to move their vehicles off the street if possible, to allow for more effective clearing. Snow may also be removed from some narrow residential streets after the graders have been through the area.
The bulk of the work is expected to take about a week, but the final cleanup will take a bit longer, the city noted.
“While snow clearing takes place day and night on residential and industrial streets, overnight snow removal on priority streets will continue,” the city noted. “Some streets may be temporarily narrowed as snow piles grow, but this work will keep roads safe and passable.”
