Three hundred and forty seven wins is a lot, but that’s how many the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball head coach Lisa Thomaidis has in her Canada West career as bench boss.
It’s a U Sports record that continues to reach new heights, and Saturday at the Physical Activity Centre (PAC) in Saskatoon the Huskies added to it, defeating the University of Regina Cougars 70-61 after a 67-61 road victory on Friday night.

The Huskies trailed the Cougars 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but Thomaidis credited her team’s resiliency as a leading factor in their 16th straight win this season.
“We had to do it in a bit of an unconventional way,” she explained. “We had people in a lot of foul trouble, we had some players that had to come in off the bench and contribute, so it was a really strong team win.”
The game was a nail-biter with back and forth action in the pivotal meeting between two provincial rivals.
The Huskies win means they remain in a tie for first in the Canada West Prairie Division with the University of Alberta heading into the final weekend of the season next week.
Thomaidis said it always gets intense when the team is playing Regina and she’s glad they picked up the win.
“To have that kind of performance, do it at home on fifth-year night in front of that crowd, is a great feeling for our team,” she said.

Saturday marked the first home game for Thomaidis after breaking the record, and the song The Best by Tina Turner could be heard all through the gymnasium as the Huskies honoured their coach.
She said she still can’t believe it happened.
“It’s incredible, a lot of credit goes to my assistant coaches who have been with me the entire time.”
Thomaidis also said she knows if someone told her past self this is what the future would hold she wouldn’t believe it.
“I would’ve said ‘what are you smoking?’,” she laughed. “I never thought I’d be here this long, never thought I’d experience this kind of success.”
Thomaidis broke the record back on Feb. 1st in a lopsided 91-35 win against Edmonton’s MacEwan Griffins, and she said going into the game she knew about the record but it didn’t add any pressure.
The Huskies will travel to Manitoba next weekend to take on the University of Brandon Bobcats on Feb. 14 and 15.
