Development plans for an affordable housing project in Saskatoon’s Wildwood neighbourhood are now in motion.
On Thursday, Camponi Housing Corporation announced it has been selected by the city to develop a 120-unit space located at 1635 McKercher Drive, the same site as the Lakewood Civic Centre.
For 50 years, the Camponi Housing Corporation has provided housing for Métis, First Nations and lower-income families in Saskatoon.
The development tentatively named “Camponi Commons” will mostly provide family-friendly three and four-bedroom suites. Smaller suites will also be available to rent for elders or single occupants.
Angela Bishop, chair of the Camponi trustees, said there is an acute shortage of affordable rental housing in Saskatoon, particularly on the east side.
She said the organization’s waitlist for affordable housing units has risen to 804 since Oct. 2024, which is a 36 per cent increase since June 2024.
“There’s a really high demand for affordable housing in Saskatoon,” she said.
She said the development will also provide wrap-around services to support residents with financial literacy and childcare needs.
“Providing holistic support and Indigenous models of care support the idea that we want our tenants not only to survive but also to thrive,” she said.
“Many of our communities have suffered from the impacts of intergenerational trauma.”
While Camponi Housing Corporation is a Métis-led organization primarily focused on Métis housing, Bishop said its services are open to others as well.
According to a media release from the housing corporation, the project is conditional on securing financing and achieving milestones set for the development of the site.
Bishop said once drawings are finalized, funding can be applied for under the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund.
Bishop said the project’s budget is $53.2 million, with a targeted completion in early 2027.
Bishop stressed the importance of creating positive relationships within the community, and that an information session will be held about the new development and its objective.
“Anybody who wants to have some discussions with us about how we can achieve or promote reconciliation and promote good relationships, we’ll always open our doors,” Bishop said.
