Man stabbed on Millar Ave marks Saskatoon’s first homicide of 2025

After a near-record high of 15 homicides in 2024, the new year has already started with one man dead and another charged with first-degree murder.

A 23-year-old man was found by police suffering from multiple stab wounds at a business in the 3900 block of Millar Avenue, according to a news release.

The Saskatoon Police Service responded to a call about the injured person on Jan. 20 at around 8 p.m.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police arrested a 53-year-old man near 2nd Avenue South and Spadina Crescent East and charged him with First Degree Murder.

Police have released no names.

The year 2024 is the second highest for homicides since 1981. Two other years had 16 murders.

The homicide victims’ age ranged from one year to 66.

1. The year’s first homicide was on Feb. 3 in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood when a 25-year-old Alberta man was found dead in a home on Lisgar Avenue. Two people have been charged.
2. The second was on Feb. 10 when a 48-year-old man was shot to death in Saskatoon’s Caswell Hill neighbourhood. One man was arrested.
3. On Feb. 17, a 48-year-old man was killed at a home on Avenue I South after being shot in the third homicide of the year. Two people have been arrested.
4. A man has been charged in the stabbing death of a 35-year-old Saskatoon on Feb. 19 in the city’s fourth homicide.
5. The fifth also happened the same day, when two boys aged 12 and 13 were charged in the weapons-related death of another 12-year-old boy in the Massey Place neighbourhood.
6. A 1-year-old boy was the victim in the city’s sixth homicide in the 100 block of Avenue T South on March 9. A woman has been charged.
7. Saskatoon’s seventh murder was on April 15 when Melissa Duquette, 24, was found dead in the basement of a house in the Dundonald neighbourhood. Two people have been charged.
8. The eighth homicide, also on April 15 after a 25-year-old man was shot in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood.
9. The following day, April 16, a 30-year-old man died in hospital after being injured on April 15. No one has been arrested.
10. On June 3, the city’s 10th homicide was recorded in the 800 block of 22nd Street West when Glen Lennie, 29, was stabbed. Two people have been charged.
11. The 11th murder in the city happened on June 12 when Harvey Zoerb, 66, was killed near Fairhaven Elementary School.
12. Two people were charged in Saskatoon’s 12th homicide of 2024 after 30-year-old Jordan Lee Morin was killed on Aug. 16 in Riversdale.
13. Saskatoon’s 13th murder was a 20-year-old woman who was found dead in the Copper Mug parking lot on November 15.
14. A 37-year-old man was murdered in Caswell Hill on Nov. 17. It was Bridge City’s 14th homicide of 2024.
15. Timothy Tootoosis a 30-year-old, was the city’s 15th murder of 2024 in Pleasant Hill.
