Brad Vrolijk, lead forecaster with Environment Canada, said temperatures across much of the prairies are expected to climb to around 0 C, or even reach above freezing this week. But, he added, the warmer temperatures won’t stick around for too long.
“That’s going to kick off a substantial change in the weather pattern over most of North America,” he said.
“Arctic air is just going to flood southwards, and by the beginning of next week we might see sub-freezing temperatures all the way to the Gulf Coast.”
According to Environment Canada’s forecast, Saskatoon can expect a high of 1 C on Wednesday, but by Saturday the Bridge City’s high will drop to -23 C.
Regina’s forecast includes highs of 0 C on both Wednesday and Thursday, but by Saturday the daytime high is expected to drop all the way to -22 C.
Vrolijk said it will take a little while for things to warm back up.
“After this one little bit of warmth we’ll see this week, we’re getting into a deep freeze for a little bit,” said Vrolijk.
“It is January on the prairies, so you have to endure it.”
One positive with the cold snap, Vrolijk explained, is the sunshine that is expected to come with it.
“By the time you hit January, it’s often either going to be mild and cloudy or sunny and cold, and there’s not often much opportunity for sunny and mild. Not that it doesn’t happen once in a while, but often that’s the way it works out,” he said.
“It’s going to get warmer, and then it’ll get very cold and probably quite sunny; that might boost your mood a little bit if you don’t like the cold.”
