Estevan’s local newspaper has shut down production, effective immediately, according to a social media post by its former editor David Willberg. In a post on the Estevan Mercury’s Facebook group, he said the decision was made by the paper’s owner, Glacier Media.
The Mercury’s last publication was issued on Jan. 1, 2025. It has served southeast Saskatchewan as a source of information for 122 years, since before Saskatchewan became a province.
Glacier Media stated in its third quarter results in November that “the Company has moved aggressively to close or sell underperforming print community media operations to focus on its core businesses.”
Sources confirm with 650 CKOM that the printing facility in Estevan is closing by the end of the month. It’s unclear how the closure will affect Saskatchewan’s two largest newspapers – the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post.

“The Estevan Web Printing is shutting down at the end of January,” wrote Pipeline Online editor Brian Zinchuk in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“While other Glacier papers in Saskatchewan haven’t shut down, yet, that I’ve heard of, that, too, is just a matter of time.”
In January 2023, Postmedia shut down its Saskatoon printing facility and switched to Glacier Media in Estevan for StarPhoenix and the Leader-Post printing operations.
In an emailed statement to 650 CKOM, Postmedia says “We are currently exploring alternate printing solutions but would like to reassure readers of the Leader-Post and the StarPhoenix that we intend to maintain our services and distribution. We are committed to delivering strong local, regional and national media coverage.”
