Conservation officers in Saskatoon had to relocate a moose on the loose on the west side of Saskatoon on Dec. 29.
The moose was spotted near the Real Canadian Superstore in Confederation Park before making its way to the front yard of a home on Douglas Crescent, where it was immobilized.

“They were able to successfully immobilize it with the combination of drugs. Once it was it was down and out and we load it up in a truck (and) took it out of the city and take it to an area that we have set aside for relocating moose,” said Chris Maier, an inspector with the Conservation Officer Service.
“(We) basically release it and then we get some reversal drugs and monitor it and also put an ear tag on it for monitoring in case it’s harvested by a hunter.”
Maier said three conservation officers were helped by four members of the Saskatoon Police Service to drag the moose onto a tarp so it could be taken away.
He said he was uncertain how long the moose was inside the city limits, but had an idea why it wandered in.
“Generally, they come in when it’s quieter, usually in the middle of the night, and then once they get startled by traffic and people moving around they either work their way out of the city or they work themselves deeper into the city,” Maier said.
“That’s usually when we have to get involved. Ideally, we try and get them out of the city on their own so we don’t have to interfere with their lives.
“There’s a lot of greenery out there. The way the city is designed, we have a lot of green spaces and then we also have a lot of people that spend a lot of time making their yards really good. It’s just a great greenery buffet for them.”
Maier said it’s not uncommon for moose to find their way into Saskatoon.
