Saskatoon’s Police Chief says there isn’t any one thing in particular that can help explain the high number of murders in the city this year.
The city’s 15th homicide occurred on Dec. 18. Police officers were called to a dark green bungalow on the corner of 22nd St. West and Avenue Q South around 11 p.m.
There, they found a body, but have so far not released any official information on who the person was, or how the person may have died. No arrests have been announced.
Cam McBride says he’s not sure what’s causing the murder rate to skyrocket.
“I can’t put my finger on one thing and say this is the cause, or this is the culprit,” he said outside of the Board of Saskatoon Police Commissioners meeting Wednesday.
And he’s aware that some people may now be feeling more vulnerable.
“I’m sensitive to the way the community’s feeling, particularly today.
“We are anticipating through provincial funding and our own city of Saskatoon funding, to increase our front line policing complement significantly. That will make a difference,” he added.
In September, the province announced $17.1 million for 100 new municipal officers across the province. Saskatoon’s share would be up to 37 new officers.
He said that would allow the police service to be more proactive, especially on the front line.
“We’ve already hired 17 for our January class, and we anticipate hiring a significant number more,” McBride said.
This year is the second highest for homicides since 1981. Two other years had 16 murders.
The homicide victims’ ages ranged from one year to 66 for the first 14.
