Winter storm slams southwest corner of province, poor highway conditions

Saskatchewan is expected to have moderate to heavy snow on Wednesday. Saskatoon is looking at total amounts of five to 10 centimetres.

Most southern areas are looking at 10 to 15 centimetres with it tapering off by morning.

Chris Stammer, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said “It’s a bit of a stronger system than, say, your classic run-of-the-mill clipper.” Adding the heaviest snowfall will be done on Wednesday evening.

The stretch from Kindersley to Moose Jaw to Estevan is expected to be in the eye of the storm.

“Reduced visibilities and moderate to heavy snow, gusty winds this afternoon, looking at winds up to 40 gusting to 60 kilometres an hour,” said Stammer.

Stammer gives good news for the holidays ahead. “It looks like the warm weather is gonna stick around into next week, looking at think single-digit highs, possibly approaching the zero-degree mark by Christmas.”

His advice is to always check the weather on the provincial highways map for any closures before doing any major travel.

Travel not recommended

The southwest corner of the province was hit hard by the winter blast.

A handful of highways were not recommended for travel.

As of 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Highway Hotline did not recommend travel in areas like Kindersley, Rosetown, Eston, Maple Creek, Swift Current, Assiniboia and more.
