A man who was arrested in Fort Qu’Appelle on Wednesday is now in hospital in serious condition after a medical event in the cells of the Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP detachment.
Police said in a news release on Friday that the man appeared to have a minor injury when he was arrested for a breach of peace on Boundary Avenue on Oct. 23 around 3:15 p.m.
RCMP said the man was exhibiting signs of intoxication and was taken into custody for his safety.

Police said the man was monitored by cell guards throughout the night but around 7 a.m. on Oct. 24, paramedics were called after an officer who was attempting to wake him up to assess him for release found the man “experiencing a medical event”. He man was then taken to hospital.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is now investigating the RCMP’s interaction with the injured man and the circumstances of his injuries, police said, adding that Saskatchewan RCMP will conduct a separate investigation into “whether any injury led to the male’s current medical state, and if any criminality contributed to it”.
SIRT investigates serious incidents involving municipal police officers and RCMP officers in the province, with a mandate that includes both on-duty and off-duty actions of police. It is an independent, civilian-led unit.
