A 31-year-old man is charged with arson causing damage to property after a series of fires broke out in Saskatoon’s Mayfair and Caswell neighbourhoods on Thursday morning.
According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, the suspicious blazes started at 9:21 a.m. when firefighters were called about a fire at a detached garage on Avenue E North. The flames spread to a second garage before it was brought under control by firefighters.

Then, at 9:53 a.m., a call came in about a deck fire on Avenue D North. That blaze was extinguished by the homeowner.
The next call – reporting a fence on fire on 31st Street West – came in just minutes later, at 10:01 a.m. A second fence fire was reported on 29th Street West at 10:37 a.m.
According to police, officers responding to the fence fires spotted a man matching the suspect’s description just a few blocks away from where one of the fences was burning. He was arrested at the scene.
“This arson is believed to be related to four other fires that took place in the area,” the police service said. “Police continue to investigate and further charges could be laid.”
In addition to the arson charge, police said the man was wanted on a warrant for being unlawfully at large.
