Melissa and Delwin Jimmy were at home in their rented basement suite in the 400 block of Avenue V. S. when heard an explosion and a fire broke out.
“I just seen the older senior tenant running down the back stairs. So, my husband grabbed the garden hose and threw it into the suite there, but it was already engulfed in the living room,” said Melissa, adding they believe the fire started from a scooter.
In a release, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFP) confirmed an electric scooter was the cause. “It is unclear whether the charging source or the battery was responsible.” SFP estimates damages to be $200,000.
“There’s like a big commotion out there fighting. So I was gonna go knock on the door and ask her if they needed help,” said Melissa. We were already doing the laundry, so noticed that they were something was going on, and then the one was grabbing a pail of water and putting it so he threw the hose into their suite. But it was already too late.”
Their niece was asleep in their suite and all their phones were dead.
“So, just making sure everybody was out and got made sure yelling around, bang, doors closing, making sure everybody got out before we got somebody to phone the fire department,” Delwin said. “Apparently, nobody has phones here.”
“It was already getting smoky down there, but it was burning for a while before they got here,” Melissa said.
According to the SFP, there were no injuries. “Firefighters observed smoke and flame from multiple windows in a house.”
With the fire extinguished investigators are on scene trying to identify the cause, origin and damage estimate, according to SFP.
